A domain name – www.yourcompany.com – is a lot like your telephone number. If someone wants to visit your website, they type the URL (your web address) into their browser.

Getting one is easy. You set up an account with an ICANN accredited company, and register your domain name. (ICANN stands for Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, and they’re the organization that sets and maintains the standards for domain name registration and prevents duplicate registrations.)

Domain registration pricing varies wildly – from $5.00 to $35, or more. Whomever you use, make sure that you read the fine print, some “deals” require that you host the domain with the registering company.
